St. Germaine's Banner
St. Germaine was the first settlement established on Shintolin by the Nexal Empire. The Nexals came from an island named "St. Germaine". The island was destroyed by the wrath of the Elder Powers, who were displeased by the sins of the populace. Only a few survivors escaped, clinging to makeshift rafts and enduring raging storms, which blew them across the ocean to the shores of this land. In Shintolin they sought to rebuild their shattered civilisation and reclaim their lost glory.
Foundation and Early YearsEditAfter a long search for a suitable site for their first settlement, St. Germaine was founded in the Year 14 by Masumi, close to the floodplanes on the eastern shore of the River Dea. The population grew rapidly, with refugees from the Nexus arriving every day. The large population allowed rapid development of St Germaine. Within three years of founding, a stonemasonary, kiln and several workshops were constructed. Agriculture soon followed, and St. Germaine became the breadbasket of the Nexal Empire. In the Year 21, Nexal archives show that St Germain boasted over 20 tiles of farmed land.
The Great War and DestructionEdit
Soon after the founding of the settlement, attacks by mysterious a group known as the Zergs and the Night Lords began. Combined with this, the growth of the Nexal Empire and their attempt to monopolise clay extraction led to conflict with nearby non-Nexal settlements. In the year 20, Masumi stood down as leader of the Nexal Empire, and was replaced by Berserkas. Under his leadership, the Nexal Empire became much more belligerent, and entered into the Great War with the Northern Shintolin Coalition. This was a time of strife where the natural order was turned on its head, and a mysterious white fog enveloped the land. With most of the residents of St. Germaine either attacking Vackra Alskade or lost in the fog, the settlement was beseiged and then destroyed in the Year 24 by the NSC.
When the war ended, St. Germaine was quickly rebuilt in the year 26, only to be attacked a second time and left in ruins.
After this point, St Germaine entered a dark age. For some time, what was once St. Germaine survived as The Remnants of Something Horrible. These remnants were annexed briefly into a settlement called Paranne by a native named Laura before being retaken by the Nexals and renamed St. Germaine around the Year 41. At some point the settlement was completely destroyed, with nothing remaining. For decades the site of St Germaine, the once proud capital of the Nexal Empire, lay empty and returned to nature.
Refounding and Final DestructionEdit
Sometime in the 90s, a ring of six stone pillars appeared around the old St Germaine totem pole. In the year 99, St Germiane was refounded, and work began to complete the ring of walls. Stone was transported from the far north along the Nexal Superhighway, a road linking Foghaven with St Germaine. This work was interrupted when the Zerg Wars erupted, and the residents of St Germaine were called away to war. For years the settlement was abandoned and the walls began to decay, although he totem pole remained standing.
Around 140, inhabitants returned to St. Germaine, and work began again to complete the walls. This was finally achieved around the year 150. For 10 years St. Germaine prospered; agriculture, pottery and stonemasonry returned, although most Nexals chose to remain in IoG, so the population remained low.
In 165 St Germaine was attacked by members of the Altan Ord. The Ord first attempted to trick the inhabitants into letting them in, claiming to be there to protect the village from unnamed foes. When this ruse failed, they attacked in force and killed the inhabitants of St. Germaine. After the attack, the remaining residents were driven away, and St. Germaine was once again destroyed.
